The rapidly growing list of retailers offering consumers incentives to spend tax rebates in their stores now includes Home Depot, Kmart, Kroger, Supervalu, Sears, Staples and Wal-MartWal-Mart has opened its first “Hispanic community” store in Dallas. The new store replaces the chain’s original Hypermart store, the predecessor to its Supercenter concept… Borders has opened its first California-based concept store in National City, one of 14 pilot stores being launched around the U.S. that include digital centers where consumers can download books and music, self-publish, and make custom CD’s…Winn-Dixie confirmed that it has completed remodeling of 47 of its 520 stores, and will complete another 50 store remodelings by the end of June…Home Depot has dropped plans to open 50 new stores, and is closing 15 stores and scaling back its plans for future expansion...Walt Disney Co. has acquired the Disney Store chain in North America from Children's Place Retail Stores Inc.

Tim Hammonds, president/CEO of The Food Marketing Institute, will retire after 15 years in those positions, once his successor has been selected…Jack Bamberger has been named chief innovation officer at Meredith Corp. Other changes include Jeannine Shao being named VP, client solutions; Jim Carr becoming VP, group publisher of Family Circle and Better Homes and Gardens; and Carey Witmer becoming publisher of FCCarla Bayha, long-time book buyer for Borders, will be heading up the retailer’s magazine category as of mid-May. In addition, Dawn Stymiest, who presently manages newsstand, is moving to a planning role within the children’s group, and Jenny Weed will be associate buyer for newsstand…Peter Weedfald has been named president of Ziff Davis Media. His background includes executive positions at Circuit City, Bigfoot Interactive ViewSonic Corp. and Samsung Electronics North America, as well nine years at ZDM earlier in his career…Kevin Warren has been promoted from VP, finance to executive VP at Benjamin News and Benjamin Distribution…The Atlantic has named Jay Lauf  VP and publisher. Lauf was previously publisher of WiredSteve DeLuca has been named VP/publisher of Details. He was previously associate publisher, Conde Nast TravelerDeb Blackburn has been promoted to VP, publisher relations at Ingram Periodicals.
